Summit of Peak 11,300 and other local action

We had a brief satellite phone call from Mark Ryman and Aaron Clifford this morning. On Sunday May 16th they summitted Alaska's Peak 11,300 via the SW Ridge (Grade V, 5.8, 60’ ice).   The climb took 19 hrs and they camped on the summit before doing the standard descent the following day. Congrats to them for the send!

MM Team Summits Mt. Dickey

We got a brief message from Dave Ahrens this morning from the Alaska Range. He and the May 2 Ruth Gorge Expedition team summited Mt Dickey via the West Face yesterday! Congrats to them! With Dave's typical understatement and humility, he said it was one of his top three "wallow fests" ever (ie: deep snow and trailbreaking). Coming from someone who has guided the complete Denali Traverse and Denali's West Buttress in the same season (a first?), this is probably saying a lot. We wonder what the top "wallow fest" was?

They took advantage of a break in the weather this afternoon to take a glacier ice fall tour, and got a chance to practice route finding and rope management. [+] READ MORE

Ruth Glacier Dispatch: Preparations for Mount Dickey!

We're pleased to say that we've heard from our group in Alaska on the eight-day expedition training course in the Ruth Gorge!  This is the message from Mountain Madness guide Dave Ahrens:

"Hello Mountain Madness!  This is Dave Ahrens calling in for our daily update from the Ruth Glacier.  We just finished up a day of crevasse rescue training in a nice big crevasse.  Everyone got a chance to spend some time hanging in the big blue hole, jugging out on ascenders, and setting up a 3:1 haul.
