Success on Antisana
by Jim Weismuller

Hello Mountain Madness,

I'm still in Quito hanging around and relaxing for a few days. I just wanted to let you know that our climb in Ecuador was a great success. We had good weather and strong climbers, but really, because of the superb mountaineering and leadership skills of Mountain Madness guides Oswaldo, Shy, and Gaspar, we were able to climb four major peaks in a week with a 100 percent summit success and no mishaps or injuries for the six of us. We were told it was only the third time in two years that Antisana had been successfully climbed. And Peter became the first Brit in 10 years to successfully climb Antisana!

Both Antisana and Illiniza Sur were especially difficult climbs and we had to make full use of glacier, ice wall, and crevasse climbing techniques. The giant glacier and ice formations were an incredible sight! Even as nerves became frayed and emotions ran high (including me), the guides maintained control and order, while smoothing things over. They are true professionals.

I have some unusual photos I'm excited about, including a volcanic eruption on Tungurahua, and a mama llama with her newborn llamagito.

So thank you to everyone at Mountain Madness for another great adventure.

Next, my sights are on Sajama in Bolivia for this upcoming June. More details and photos later...

Sincerely,

Jim Wiesmueller
