Ecuador Mountaineering School Summits Cayambe, Iliniza North, and Chimborazo

The latest Ecuador Mountaineering School started with a city tour in Quito, visiting churches and walking around the town as climbers got accustomed to the altitude of the Andes. The first acclimitization climb was Ruco Pichincha, aka "Raccoon Pikachu," where the team kept their fingers crossed for the weather to hold out during the five-hour trip. It did - that day.

Class in the Cascades: Introduction to Mountaineering

Have you ever looked at a mountain and wondered, “How do I get up there?”

Over the weekend, Jacob Oram and I co-taught an Introduction to Mountaineering course that included a summit of Ruth Mountain in the North Cascades near Mount Baker. Our students came away from the two-day course with some of the foundational skills and a better idea for what it’s like to get out there and up there.

A Window into the Alpine Climbing Course

What a whirlwind these last eight days have been! From clear skies and perfect sunsets to high winds and post holing through snow, Jennifer, Alex and Guide Niels Meyer saw it all during their Alpine Climbing Course. It even rained for a brief spell, just to remind them they were in the Cascades. Progressing from rock climbing to alpine rock climbing, and then to glaciated travel on one of the North Cascades' most beautiful peaks, the Alpine Climbing Course provides an introduction to many forms of mountain travel.
