EBC Wrap-up

Madness guide Mara Larson gives us the final update from Everest Base Camp Trek.

It's just a week past Thanksgiving now, and finally the gear is washed, the sleeping bags are airing, and the Khumbu cough is in the distant past - for all but me, Knute, and Mike, anyway.

 

How time flies post-Himalaya. And how easily we manage to forget pungent bathroom smells at 17,000 feet and the early morning deep-freeze. Our descent from Everest and the Khumbu was a celebration on many levels.

Everest Base Camp Trek Begins Under Clear Skies

Yak bells clang and Tibetan chanting plays behind me while I sit writing our Namche Bazaar updates in the sunshine this Saturday morning. The Everest Base Camp team made it above 12,000 feet on day two of our climb through the Himalaya. We’re perched 3,000 feet above the Bhote Khosi gorge, and the views from this mountain mecca are vertical extremes in all directions. Time to enjoy the scene and reflect on the last couple days.

Everest Base Camp Trek Update - "It's the Wild in Myself I Remember"

It sounds easy: Wake-up tea every morning, yaks carrying your bags, kind Sherpas showing you the way, tea houses with hot showers to wash the dust off every day. 

Yet even with all that support, the challenge is real. This place remains untamed.  It's such a beautiful yet harsh landscape. Dry, rocky, dusty. Blazing sun, cold nights.

"Like Returning to Earth from Another World"

Most recent update from MM Guide Shayan: We have left Everest Base Camp under clear skies and cold temperatures. We had a very comfortable night there huddling in our heated dining tent. The camp has many fewer tents this year but it seems by the amount of traffic headed up the trail that won't last long. [+] READ MORE
