The Elusive Obispo

El Altar, a group of nine summits connected by the same base, is one of the most iconic mountains of Ecuador. For local climbers, its ascent represents the entry exam to the “real deal” league. This “little” range presents a spectacular combination of intimidating cliffs, long ice waterfalls, and broken glaciers - all surrounded by remote highlands and hidden lakes. It is no wonder the indigenous and spanish cultures always treated the mountain with a respect reserved for the divine.

Cotopaxi success

Cotopaxi success! Second trip of the season and we're all so happy the mountain is open for climbers. Our second team reported good conditions and that the mountain is overall in great shape for climbing. After an acclimatization ascent on Illiniza Norte the team made good work of the Coto climb. Congrats to all of them!

Cotopaxi - Back in Business!

Just over 2 years ago, Cotopaxi started an eruption phase that lasted almost 6 months. Since the first eruption, the summit and upper mountain have been closed to climbing. The Ecuadorian government reopened the peak to climbing October 6. Mountain Madness has resumed summit climbs and treks around Cotopaxi and, in fact, are operating our 2nd Cotopaxi expedition since it re-opened.

Ecuador Mountaineering School Summits Cayambe, Iliniza North, and Chimborazo

The latest Ecuador Mountaineering School started with a city tour in Quito, visiting churches and walking around the town as climbers got accustomed to the altitude of the Andes. The first acclimitization climb was Ruco Pichincha, aka "Raccoon Pikachu," where the team kept their fingers crossed for the weather to hold out during the five-hour trip. It did - that day.

Ecuador Update 6/12/2017

Madness guide Juliana Garcia writes in with this update on the Ecuador expedition:

After few days of acclimatization in our amazing mountains, we summitted Iliniza Norte, followed by Cayambe.

On Cayambe we had a great weather, a full moon, good snow conditions, and a lot of motivation from our team! After many hours of battling up, we made it to the summit in eight hours.  Laurence and Samuel, congrats on your effort!
