Glorious Cascade Summer Welcomes Climbers to Mount Triumph

It's early August in the Cascades and high barometric pressure has been providing an excellent weather window for rock routes on the higher peaks. North Ridge of Baker

The weekend of  July 20th Yoshiko and I guided the North Ridge of Mount Baker.  Going into the trip, as we often see in the Cascades, an inch of rain was forecasted for the first day of the trip.  When I see rainfall amounts like that I generally try to find an umbrella or a backup plan.  Fortunately a backup plan presented itself, and my catlike aversion to wetness was fulfilled.  We spent the first day of our trip at Mount Erie reviewing some rock climbing techniques, as well as belaying, rappelling, and multi-pitch transitions.

Early season on the Easton Glacier route of Mt. Baker

Mountain Madness guide Chris Marshall and assistant Quinn Rohlf just came off a successful summit climb of Mount Baker. While the weather low on the mountain wasn't exactly cooperative, the team, fueled by gourmet backcountry cuisine, persevered climbing through a whiteout and were rewarded with a bluebird summit! AIARE Level 2: Snow Geeks Anonymous

It’s a common question, “So what’s the next step in avalanche education?” Well, for some it’s continuing to refresh and sharpen the skills taught in a Level 1. For others it’s stepping out and taking an AIARE Level 2 course. AIARE’s Level 2 is titled “Evaluating Snow Stability and Avalanche Hazard” and we lovingly call it “Snow Geeks Anonymous.” Why?
