A PERSONAL HISTORY

I was born in North Carolina, but grew up in Virginia. I graduated from the University of Virginia in 1975, with a degree in Environmental Science. I moved to Boulder then, where I lived for the next twelve years. During my time in Boulder I worked variously as a computer programmer, furniture maker, but mostly as a mountain guide.

As a guide, I worked for the International Alpine School and Fantasy Ridge, but since the mid-80's I've been self-employed, guiding trips overseas for the most part. I became a member of the American Mountain Guides Association in 1986 and became certified; I've also taught courses for the AMGA and served as an assessor on AMGA certification exams.

Since the early 80's I've had my photographs published in many books, magazines and catalogs. I've also written several articles for magazines and journals, as well as writing and publishing three local climbing guidebooks. Today, writing and photography is my main business, supplemented by guiding (I'll email you samples of my photography or writing on request.)

I moved to Telluride in '87, then to Norwood in '92, where I've lived ever since. Currently, I travel extensively, exploring remote areas of the Himalaya and Patagonia mostly, taking alot of notes and pictures along the way.

I've been involved with filmmaking for many years. Among other projects, I worked on National Geographic's "Ice Climb" as guide and rigger; I did "Rock and Road" and "The Kingdom of Muli" for American Adventure productions (both were based on my treatments and I starred in them); several episodes of "High Country Climber" for the Outdoor Life Network (as talent and rigger). I also appeared in, and helped film, John Catto's award-winning "La Escoba de Dios". Now, I aspire to make my own films and web content.

Another project that I'm working on is a book (pictures and text) about the Tibetan people. The October 2000 issue of Rock and Ice magazine ran a photo feature entitled "The Tibetans", featuring my polaroid transfer prints. In the late fall of 2001, Christine Boskoff and I will be conducting a trip to the highest peak of Yunnan province, China. Then, tentatively planning to return to Patagonia to make an exploratory trip out on the southern icecap, during the austral summer season.

Christine and I are planning to go to Mt. Everst in the spring of 2002, leading a trip for Mountain Madness. Later that year, in the summer, we will return to Pakistan to attempt the SSE Spur of K2 .
